Game idea

Over the last week, I have been working on my game idea. The original version was quite superficial and didn't explain the game in the level of detail needed to start designing and programming. So I took my time and improved the game idea. I came up with the concept of dreams and I think it's a good fit. Therefore, dungeons in the game will be called dreams and can be of any imaginable fantasy and genre. This allows me to include all kinds of settings in the game and gives me a lot of freedom.

Setup

Then I focused on getting started. I decided to go with the Unity engine because there are a lot of tutorials and learning materials that are freely available. I already bookmarked some tutorial series on YouTube. Setting up Unity was pretty easy. After that, I was looking for a good tool to create pixel art for my game. I came across a program called "Aseprite" and took a look at it. I think it's a great tool to get into pixel art and I'm looking forward to creating some great-looking sprites with it. The next tool I installed was Obsidian. It's a note-taking tool like Notion or Evernote and I use it to keep track of all the ideas and designs I'm working on and to plan the game. Finally, I created a GitHub repository and added it to my Unity project to keep track of all the changes and make development easier.

Roadmap

I also created the first little roadmap with all the ToDo's and steps to complete. Below is a small excerpt of the roadmap I came up with. This will be my guideline for the next few weeks.

Main menu

After all the planning and installation, I wanted to jump right in. I planned how the main menu should work and started to implement it in Unity. Currently, there are only two scenes programmed. The main menu and the settings menu. But the settings menu is not finished yet. There is a lot to pay attention to and learn how things are done in Unity. Like how UI is done, how UI components like dropdowns, tabs, and checkboxes work, and how to make everything look nice. I have already learned a lot and taken care of a lot of overheads like localization, sprite design, etc. Currently, the UI looks pretty ugly and I'm not very good at pixel art. I hope I can improve both with more practice, but for the current testing purposes, it's enough.

The upcoming week

This week I want to finish the main menu, get better at pixel art, and maybe take a look at implementing the basic game mechanics or designing the first player. See you next week.
